Keywords: Plaid, Tartan, carotté, careaux

1. Download the Plaid PSD Template. You can change the resolution.

2. Guides have been placed to mark the half and quaters of the square. CTRL+H to View/Hide the Guides.

3. Fill the first Layer with a base color.

4. Create a new Layer.

5. Create the first colored stripe and make sure it is centered (CTRL+A, CTRL+X, CTRL+V).

6. Change the Layer Mode to Multiply and reduce the Opcaity to taste.

6. Duplicate this layer and Rotate it by 90°.

7. Merge the two Stripes Layers.

8. Use the >Filter>Others>Offset to create an seamless external stripe.

This template is a 720 pixels square therefor using a 360 (half of 720) will move your stripe exactly halfway on your square.
Using 180 (one quarter) will move your stripe by 1/4.

9. Use different width and colors to create new stripes. (Remember to set the layer mode to Multiply and reduce the opacity)

At this point you can either save the file as a jpg for the web or create a pattern to use in Photoshop.

To Save the pattern:
1. Flatten the image.
2. >Edit>Define Pattern
3. Name it and Click "OK"

To use the pattern:
1. On a new Layer or Selection, go to >Edit>Fill
2. Change "Contents>Use" to "Pattern"
3. Click the "Custom Pattern" drop-down menu to select your pattern.
4. Click ok
