Torn paper effect
Before you start buying plug-ins, you have to remember that shadows, Bevels AND TEXTURES... will generate 90% of the effect. You may also use two layers to simulate the faded-out torn out paper.

Please read the Textures Tutorial first

There is several options on the market

1. Alien Skin Splat!>Edges Filter ($69)

2. Xenofex>Crumple Filter ($129)

3. Auto FX>Dreamsuite1>Crease Filter ($199)

4. In Photoshop use the >Distort>Glass (Built-in FREE filter). I usually use the follwing settings: Distortion=10 Smooth=10 Texture=Frosted. The only problem with this is that you'll have to clean the background color

5. Don't bother with the Sketch>Torn Edges filter... it requires too much cleaning up!

6. Do it manually using a bristle brush, then modify the level settings to remove "gray areas"

7. My favorite way of doing them is using the >Distort>Displace filter (Built-in FREE filter)

1. Scan a piece of crumpled paper, anything with a texture (save it as a .PSD) or click on the image to download the file. This file will be refered as a "Displacement Map". You can find several of them in the Textures section.
2. Create a new document and draw you piece of "paper": by filling a rectangle with any color or by drawing it with a large brush.

3. Use >Filter>Distort>Displace

  • Play with % settings (bigger numbers will increase the effect).<
  • Only use "Stretch to fit" mode to avoid repetitions of the pattern. (you can also use any .PSD texture file - found in the >Presets>Textures folder)
4. A dialogue box will pop-up. Choose your "Displacement Map" (the PSD file)
Voilà!
